VLGA combines complex with simple
24 November 2009
The Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) recently went live with their new website. The project brief was clear:
- Update the look & feel
- Simplify the user experience for visitors
- Simplify internal management of content

VLGA serves a vital role in local government by providing a resources and training to equip members involved in various roles across Victoria. The previous website had become too complex to use and maintain which is where Mintleaf Studio came in.
The solution for VLGA centred around the library of resources available on the site. Each library item is categorised by it's type (e.g. News, Media Release, etc…) and then by topic (e.g. affordable housing, climate change, etc…) and often is available in multiple locations. In addition to storing data in clear places across the website, the Library became a master list with a custom search that simplified the process of searching for resources across the entire website.
Coupled with internal management and a clear structure for managing and storing information, the VLGA website has the ability to grow without compromising the intuitive user experience or the ability for staff to manage content.
Future phases for the website are planned and the modular structure of the information architecture and software will ensure that this is seamless for both internal management and the user experience.
